Chapter 29

Serena

Page Twenty-two

June 2023 ~ Fox Creek, NC

Serena had never had to say goodbye to a life before. She always left without warning. Hugging Wren and Adam, then forcing herself to walk away from them, was harder than she’d been expecting. Even Adam picked up on her hesitation.

“It’s only one night,” he said into her hair as they hugged a second time. “When you get back, I’ll make cauliflower wings.”

She smiled and forced herself to step back. “Okay. It’s a plan.” Adam smiled and kissed her cheek. He was back to his easy-going self now that Nolan was leaving.

Serena had no idea how Nolan’s short stay here would impact the other Serena. Would she remember Nolan’s true identity? Would she ponder their strange conversations about jumping lives? Or would her brain invent a series of memories to match the story she’d told Adam?

She had entertained multiple theories over the past decade about the impact on the lives she borrowed and had landed on one where Serena didn’t remember her. Her theory was that she remembered the actions Serena had undergone while in her body, but not her internal thoughts.

Then again, she might remember it all and decide to change her whole life as a result, despite Serena’s efforts to limit her interference. But there was no way to know, and nothing she could do about it, so it wasn’t worth worrying about. She had plenty of her own problems without adding the other Serena’s.

Speaking of problems, she glanced at Nolan, who was looking out of the window, hands clenched around his knees. She was so mad she could hit him. What the hell had he been thinking? But she couldn’t think that now, either. Anger didn’t mix well with focus, and she really needed to focus. If all went well, she’d have plenty of time to be angry with Nolan later.

“Okay,” she said once they arrived at the hospital, shifting her car into park. Nolan looked over at her, eyes sad and red-rimmed, but she ignored him. She reached into her purse and pulled out the double-pack of EpiPen injectors.

“Do you know what to do?” He slipped his phone out of his pocket.

“Yeah. I watched a few videos.”

Nolan nodded but didn’t put his phone away. “You still haven’t told me how this all works.”

“My jumps are triggered by bursts of adrenaline,” she said sharply. “That’s all you need to know.”

“But in Atlanta … when you made it happen. How did you do that?”

“Are we really going to do this right now?” she asked, looking down at the EpiPen in her hand.

“I guess not.” He rubbed the back of his neck and pointed his sad eyes down to his lap.

Serena huffed out a breath, then said in a rush, “I had a panic attack. Sometimes I can make them come on. That’s what happened in Atlanta. And the first time, when we jumped together—I thought you’d been hit by a car. Anyway, these pens should give me a similar jolt, okay?”

“Okay.
